'Kitchie Nadal' Live in Toronto
(by Phil Mark)

If you haven't yet heard of the name 'Kitchie Nadal' you are not alone. In fact, here in Toronto, it's rare to encounter someone who's heard of her or her music. Yet if you were to venture on a trip to the Philippines you'd quickly realise who 'Kitchie Nadal' is. She is everywhere. Kitchie has got an inescapable presence back home that its almost impossible not to be immersed in her music, paraphernalia, tv appearances, and propaganda. Welcome to Kitchie's world. So what is this phenomenon called Kitchie Nadal you ask ?. Read on.

Kitchie was born 'Anna Katrina Nadal'. She is reported to be the cousin of Rivermaya's guitar wiz 'Rico Blanco'. Her first introduction to the Filipino music scene was through the popular Filipino pop-rock band 'Mojofly'. As lead singer of the group, Kitchie has brought chart-topping hits like 'Another Day', and 'Scooter Boy'. Not long after her stint with 'Mojofly' she dropped out of the band to concentrate more on her studies. Who could blame her as she was in pursuit of a double major at 'De La Salle University', for Psychology and Education. Her hiatus brought a lot of discontent towards 'Mojofly' fans since it happened so abruptly and with the least of notice. A year passes by and Kitchie announces that she's back and plans to continue as a solo artist supported by a meticulously-picked group of musicians, Jeff De Castro (lead guitar), Aaron Cambonero (bass), and Marco Guzman (drums). The resulting band will carry her name. It is rare for a Filipino band to assume the name of the lead subject as the group's identity. What happens afterwards is what many in the industry describe as 'Philippine music history in the making'.

Kitchie Nadal today is larger than life. Kitchie is out-selling, out-charting, out-performing, out-shining, any current Filipino musician on any genre. Her self-titled solo debut album has surpassed platinum status and is responsible for producing three number-one hit singles in 'Bulong', 'Wag Na Wag Mong Sasabihin', and 'Same Ground'. Most of the songs in her debut album are motivational and spiritual. It is evident throughout the album that some of Kitchie's songs, such as 'Deliverance' and 'You're Worthy' tell of the positive spiritual influence she's found from her faith group, Victory Christian Fellowship. Kitchie Nadal, a christian band ? ... most definitely !. Looking for spiritual direction, guidance, or songs of praise ? ... all are fully employed in Kitchie's debut album.

Just recently, Kitchie has been nominated to a total of seven major categories in this year's Awit Awards (Philippines' equivalent to the Grammy). She nabbed two trophies as a result. One for 'Best Performance by a Female Recording Artist' and the other for 'Best Ballad', both being attributed to her smash hit single 'Wag na wag mong sasabihin'. To top it all off, this same song was used as part of the movie score of a Korean mega-hit flick titled 'Lovers in Paris'.

It is evident that Kitchie's thunder gets heard far beyond the Philippine archipelago. Now, Kitchie's thunder will be heard in Toronto. Kitchie Nadal Live in Toronto!.
