From time to time, someone produces a musical hit that’ll take a city or country by storm. Almost to the point of collective hysteria it
manages to succumb the masses into a state of yearning. This is specially true to those hits that are being accompanied by an algorithm of
dance moves such as ’Thriller’ or ’Macarena’. The 60’s brought us "The Name Game", in the 70’s we had "YMCA", by the 80’s it was "Thriller",
and in the 90’s "Macarena". Now we’re seeing a great candidate in the song "Pinoy Ako, Pinoy Tayo" by "Orange and Lemons".
Historically, the song was produced for the Philippine equivalent of UK’s smash hit ’Big Brother’. Although UK’s Big Brother
soundtrack wasn’t much of an influence as its Philippine brethren ’Pinoy Big Brother’. It’s interesting though that the song is complete
with its own choreographed dance moves, music video, and of course its own ’themed’ TV series, perhaps a first.
I’ve stumbled upon many pedestrian video outtakes where they did their own renditions of the song. Some lip-synch, some make fun of it, some too young to even know what the lyrics meant. There
are obviously those who play it through a band and
then there’s the everyday fan who decides to make a video of themselves singing and dancing to its tune.
What’s interesting though is this video of a group of office employees managing to record a video of them dancing to the song while they were at work. Such obstacles one has to endure in order to satisfy their momentary needs. Hysteria, perhaps. A hit, without a doubt.
OK, let’s do it altogether now ..… |
