Biography: To this day, he's still amazed at how it all came together. When Mark decided to form a band one spring day in June 2007, he figured it would just be one that would cover OPM alternative music from the Philippines, similar to what most Filipino garage bands in Toronto usually do initially. A steady set of weekend gigs at Aristokrat Mississauga allowed him and his bandmates from JAM'D to gel and find their groove. With the luxury of four individuals who can sing, they were able to pursue varied styles of pop, ballad, and rock OPM, and quickly received a good following. Unfortunately behind the scenes, the band succumbed to egos and different interests, and Mark was forced to regroup. Fortunately he quickly met Aaron from Addictive Remedy and Angel from Bluer Than Sky, and despite their different musical backgrounds, were able to form the foundation from what was left behind. Eventually the trio were joined by good friends Charles and Emile in late January 2008, and with their regular weekend gigs at Cusina Restaurant, they found their sound and officially called it Subtle Freefall.
"I've been lucky", says Mark about the songs he has written so far. "Over the past half year I've been able to pursue tunes that would regularly bottle up in my head, capture them on my acoustic guitar, and then come up with lyrics based on my life experiences. I'm humbled that my bandmates and closest friends find my songs to be straightforward and catchy, and that's all that a songwriter could really hope for, the ability to connect. Although they're primarily written in Tagalog and obviously targeted to Pinoys here in Toronto, we do hope that people can relate their own life stories to these songs, to tap into that lingering longing to go back home and not forgetting where we came from."
The debut single Time Space Warp and the album's carrier track Balikbayan definitely capture that intention, and in a nutshell define what this band's core sound is like. They're currently pursuing arrangements with Radio Insect Records to arrange and record these tracks for release come Fall 2008.
